Small Living Room Ideas That Don't Involve Buying Less Furniture

Sightlines, leg height and one big rug.

Small rooms fail when they are furnished timidly. Several small pieces read as clutter; one properly scaled piece reads as calm.

Raise everything off the floor

Visible legs let light and floor run underneath. The same sofa on a plinth base makes a room feel a third smaller.

One large rug, not two small

A rug that reaches under all the seating unifies the room. Postage-stamp rugs chop it up.

Protect the sightline

Keep the view from the doorway to the far window clear. That diagonal is what the brain measures as 'space'.
