A sofa is the single most-used object in most homes and the one people research least. We bought or borrowed twenty-two, sat on them for nine months, stained them deliberately, and took three apart to look at the frames. These are the five that survived.
How we tested
Each sofa spent at least six weeks in a working living room. We measured seat height, depth and firmness change over time, ran fabric abrasion tests to 30,000 Martindale cycles, spilled red wine and olive oil on every upholstery option, and disassembled three units to inspect joinery and suspension.
What actually matters
Frame material, suspension type and foam density predict longevity far better than brand or price. Anything with a particleboard frame or serpentine springs stapled directly into softwood will sag inside three years.
What to ignore
Thread counts on upholstery, 'lifetime' warranties that exclude cushions, and showroom firmness — most foam softens 15–20% in the first six months.
